What does a Vegan take to a BBQ???

The cookies turned out as expected. Delish. I took one batch out of the dehydrator after only 1 hour due to popular demand but as this was my first attempt at cookies I wanted to see them crisp up a little more as both my taste testers were divided on what would taste nicer. After another hour I thought they were just right.

So did you have any idea what was in them?

I used 3 cups of almond and hazelnut meal from the leftover Chocolate Banana Nutshakes 1 cup of flax meal, 1/2 cup of cacao nibs, 1/2 cup of sultanas, 1/2 cup of goji berries and a handful of those dates and processed it roughly in the food processor. I then put some RAW honey (just enough to bind the UN-cookies).

1. Any advice on finding RAW or Vegan restaurants abroad?

Hmmm, this is a tough one. When I goto places like London there are many RAW friendly and even some RAW specific restaurants, but more obscure places like small towns in Europe can be difficult so some pre planning is required. I try and research the place before I leave home to find a supermarket or a general store, or even take some supplies with me from home like avocados (they travel well) and nuts and seeds. Most hotels have a good range of whole fruit available and if you are serious then you might want to invest in a Travel Blender like I have with the Tribest Travel Blender (I bought mine here). It is also handy for grinding nuts and seeds at home and making salad dressings.

tribest What does a Vegan take to a BBQ???Also if you are going to eat foods not inline with your ‘raw’ living, then consider taking some supplements along as well. Drink plenty of water (as eating raw usually provides you with more hydration) and enjoy your holiday. I tend to eat more vegetarian cooked foods on trips away, and sometimes find it hard to stay away from a local treat or two.

If you are serious about sticking to your guns then www.happycow.net has a range of restaurants and health food stores listed by region of where in the world you are going. Check it out before you leave home to get an idea.

2. Which brand of dehydrator should I buy and what kind?

I love my dehydrator! I try to not use it too much when I am concentrating on more wholefoods, but it certainly adds some more variety to a High Raw diet such as mine. You can use it in so many ways, including to make my birthday cake, raw pizza, flax crackers and what I made yesterday, unCOOKIES.

dehydrator What does a Vegan take to a BBQ???When I was looking around at dehydrators, I consulted some friends who already had theirs and they ALL recommended without fail an EXCALIBUR 9 Tray with 26 hour timer (even though I was interested in a 5 Tray initially). As dehydrating foods can take some time, a timer is a necessity as you may wish to stop the process whilst asleep or away from home. Also, as much as Excalibur offer a 5 tray model, anyone I have known who has ordered a smaller version has wished for the 9 tray after the fact. It has more room to make larger items and easily a couple of tomatoes dehydrating can take up to 5 trays or more. I bought my dehydrator when I was on a work trip to the UK through here.

Yesterday I started my day with this smoothie:

This kept me going until dinner time (I had a whole jug of it in the fridge as well). Well until Pat (Kiter boy) came home in the afternoon and made ANOTHER Chocolate & Banana Nutshake. Seriously the boy is addicted. He is keeping me in stock of nut meal for plenty more recipes to come!!!!

After he impressed Becci with our new favourite drink (she came over to write out the Birthday cake recipe!!!! Finally! I will share it with you all tomorrow…PROMISE), I set about making some Veggie Parcels for the BBQ we were going to and Pat made a massive salad. This was all after I did my usual veggie baking soda bath process however:

I threw some zuchinni’s slices, sliced cherry tomatoes, a whole red onion and grated carrot in a bowl with some chilli paste, tamari sauce, olive oil, sesame oil, fresh garlic and ginger. I made 3 parcels as I knew people would be keen to try it if they saw us eating ours. Pat chose to eat his raw and demolished the lot. I put the other two parcels on the BBQ to slow cook them and I couldn’t get enough of it!!
