Where Do I Get My Protein From???? And 2 Important Movies You Must Watch.
Posted by GirlonRaw on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 ·
The question most Vegans/Vegetarians get on a regular basis is: where do you get your protein from?
I get my protein from a varied diet of green leafy vegetables, nuts & seeds, fruits and sea vegetables.
The amount of protein that people think we require is far overestimated as it is not in fact ‘protein’ that our bodies require, but the amino acids, which our very clever bodies are able to assemble through a diet rich in what I already consume (especially green leafy vegetables which I never fail to consume every day either in juice, smoothie or whole form).
New research has revealed that overconsumption of animal based protein (plant protein is different due to the lack of animal fat) can lead to kidney damage, osteoporosis and possibly cancer.
Interesting to note that the percentage of calories from protein for green leafy vegetables is higher than a pork chop or a lean beef steak. I am always eating or juicing cabbage, spinach, lettuce and swiss chard and if anything in the last 2 months, I have definitely not lost muscle definition, but increased it, and my energy is endless.
I’m not sure but I have not heard of anyone in the West having any malnutrition or other complications from a lack of protein in their diet however I feel that my diet is definitely not lacking in protein (or amino acids) due to the crazy amount of fruit & veggies that I consume.
My good friend Casey wrote more about it
here.
Also have a think about why we are being told to eat more meat and dairy. There is ALOT of money involved in these industries, and if we all stopped or even reduced our consumption, how many companies would suffer. And perhaps these companies are funding biased research?? I am not sure, I am just posing the question.
Pretty much all it comes down to with me though is to listen to my body. In nature some of our biggest herbivores are some of the strongest; Elephants, Gorillas etc, and when they feel unwell they know intuitively what to eat and what not to eat as they do even when they are healthy. In my opinion we have junked our bodies up over time with processed and refined products that we have lost all ability to know what our bodies need.
With a high raw diet, I have a clearer knowing of what my body is needs to feed on, so for example tonight after my 6km jog with the puppy, I felt like oranges. So this is what I ate.
Earlier today I was sooo excited to have one of my favourite Vegan’s over for lunch. Natasha of
The Voracious Vegan, came over to catch up since my big trip away, girl talk, get some Lucy cuddles (as Natasha looked after and almost stole my puppy whilst I was away for work) and share some food. I made these:
Soak rice paper in luke warm water for 2 minutes and drain on paper towel.
Today I filled them with red capsicum matchsticks, bean shoots, carrot matchsticks, shredded spinach and a couple of pieces of mint, then roll them up and served with sweet chilli sauce.
Then I was soooo keen to start eating that I forgot to take a proper photo but I decided to make Gena from Choosing Raw’s Raw Peanut Noodles
here.
Not the best representation but OMGoodness, we polished our plates clean. Any of you raw curious bloggies, HAVE to try this dish.
Natasha spoilt me with 2 Vegan Chocolate Cupcakes….um yeah they were DEEELISH. See, there was no time for a piccy as I inhaled them but hoping she will come up with the goods on her
blog soon.
I have to get up at silly o’clock for work tomorrow so I will sign off now, but over the last couple of days I have watched 2 very important films that if you have not heard of yet, I really hope you take the time to watch.
The first one was
HOME. It is free and comes in almost every language. Apparently we only really have around 10-15 years to really make some changes to the way we live and our planet, or else there could be dire consequences. It pays to be informed. Click on
here to watch!!
The second movie was recommended to me by
Kristen’s Raw over a year ago,
Sharkwater. You guys have to track down a copy. I bought mine at the Aquarium in Auckland when my brother and I went to go check out the penguins and the staff told us the the
Sea Shepherd (the conservation vessel which features in the film as well as in Discovery’s Whale Wars) had only just had a launch party the night before as they had docked in Auckland ready to head down to Antarctica on a mission to protect the whales. This film follows Rob Stewart, a Canadian biologist who travels the world to protect and educate on the world’s most important marine animals and how their survival impacts our future. Now I want to know how I can help!!!
Happy watching everyone. Let me know what you think
Time for bed zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
