A Recipe For Jetlag & More…
Hi hi, sorry for my absence of late. My honey is home from Australia and I have quite a few exciting projects on the go, but rest assured I haven’t forgotten you and I have some quick recipes I want to share with you
Heather Poole, one of my favourite Flight Attendant Bloggers and also an upcoming author of a tell all book of essays of her experience in the skies over the last 14 years, recently asked me to put together a recipe using cherries to coincide with her latest giveaway of a travellers kit, including you guessed it, CHERRIES! Check it out here!
According to Heather “What you probably already know is jet lag can be cured by taking melatonin. What you may not know is tart cherries contain a significant amount of melatonin.” So if you are like my many flight attendant buddies or even my pal Erin and you need an instant cure for jetlag, perhaps you need to give this recipe a try.
With the Cherry Chocolate Bomb Shake doing the rounds over the internet of late by my Soul Sista Kristen, I was hard pressed trying to come up with something original as it was hard to beat the genius of that BOMB drink. But I think I did ok. It ends up having a frozen yoghurty consistency. And it’s VEGAN
Cherry Coco Jetlag Smoothie
Ingredients:
- 1 Young Thai Coconut Water and Meat (view How To Open a Thai Coconut Video here)
- 1 ½ cups of Frozen Organic Cherries
- 2 Frozen Bananas
- Juice of 1 Lime
- 1 T of Agave/Maple Syrup
- Pinch of Salt
Blend all ingredients on high in a high-speed blender and serve with a cherry on top!
Serves 3 – 4
Next up is was my quick and easy dinner the other night. Craving something warm, tasty and comforting I whipped up some tasty red quinoa.
Red Quinoa Pilaf
I didn’t really follow a recipe but I sauteed some onion and garlic in water til the onion went clear, then added 2 cups of quinoa with 4 cups of water, a handful of chopped mushrooms, some spinach and chopped zuchinni and boiled with veggie stock, cayenne powder, lemon juice and cumin til all water had evaporated. Served it with a green salad.
Then this morning I made a HARDCORE Green juice. It’s not often I pull out the Champion Juicer for juice fest, favouring the easier to clean Vitamix blender but I was seriously feeling I needed some Green in my life. Warning: this juice is not for the faint of heart
Hardcore Green Juice

Ingredients:
- 3 pears
- 2 small cucumbers (this is what they look like to us in Saudi)
- half a head of romaine lettuce
- 1 cup of packed fresh parsley leaves
Juice all ingredients in your juicer. Try and alternate firmer ingredients with the leaves to assist them going through. I like to start off with the parsley, rolled up into compact balls, then follow with some pear, then more parsley, then cucumber, then lettuce then pear until all done. You want to try and aim to finish with the firmer ingredients to help move the remaining pulp through.
Tip: to ensure you get all the GREEN goodness that is included in the foam, I stir all the juice and foam up then quickly whiz it up in the blender before drinking.
This juice wasn’t too sweet, but was a palatable and uninteresting in flavour. Gave me a better kick this morning than any coffee could that’s for sure.

Holy YUM. I have read about the cherries and jet lag. Always wondered if it was really true. That quinoa looks divine!
Wow I have only just learnt about this (melatonin). Great isn’t it?

Oh my, coconuts growing in your backyard? would be in heaven!!! where do you live? Have you tried an asian market??
Your hardcore juice is almost like tabbouli!
(Okay, not really. But it has lots of parsley and cucumber…) When I get a strong enough blender, I’ll probably start with the cherry drink!

Did not that about cherries…good to know it helps with jetlag!
Wow, interesting fact about cherries, good to know! The quinoa looks fabulous!
Wow! what a *coincidence as I have also appreciated some red quinoa, coconut water and greens recently too, I guess great minds really do think alike!!! I’ve heard about cherries(love cherries:) containing melatonin before, thanks for the reminder.
*coincidences are God in disguise!
Sounds good but Cherries make my mouth and throat swell and itch

LOL – I love you
Hey Robyn,
I did not know melatonin was a cure for jetlag. Now I know how movie celebrities and journalists overcome jetlag and not look like a zombie. I like the cherry coconut smoothie, but I don’t know if “meat” is actual meat that is dissovled and mixed in. I love cherries! You should patent this, get it US-FDA approved and sell it in hand size containers. I heard of quinoa, but not sure what it is. This is a great smoothie! I made it yesterday as I was really lagged after my flight from Holland to San Francisco. Oh thrown in three days of delay and it made for a very tired blogger.
Did it work? Not sure but it tasted delicious!!!
Hehe, glad you liked the taste. I loved it when I made it too. Maybe I should make one now!
