Just like a Strawberry Milkshake Only Crunchy

Oh I know, I am always going on about my favourite smoothie, The Avocolada (thanks Matthew!), but seriously this new one has got to me my all time favourite smoothie!!! I talk about it almost as much at the Avocolada but this one rocks my socks off! I used to treat myself to this smoothie a few times a week when I was at 105degrees.

See?

And?

Right at this moment I have already downed 2 large glasses in my own kitchen and am sneaking some out of the hubby’s glass whilst he looks away. This one is to LIVE FOR!!! It goes down so well and the cacao nibs give it just the right bit of crunch!

Strawberry Seduction

(inspired from 105degrees Strawberry Seduction here)

Serves 2 (or 1 gutsy girl like me!)

2 large glasses of non dairy milk – I make my own almond milk

1 cup of frozen organic strawberries

1 frozen banana

2 T cacao nibs

Edit: I forgot to include the 2T of agave nectar in the original posting!

1 T coconut butter/oil

pinch of salt

Blend all ingredients in a high powered blender until smooth.

This makes a very thick milkshake (you almost need to eat it with a spoon). Refreshing on a hot day!

TELL ME IF YOU LOVE IT AS MUCH AS ME! I could just sip this all day and have a completely enjoyable liquid diet! icon wink Just like a Strawberry Milkshake Only Crunchy It really has seduced me!

  2. Hhmmm sounds so yummy! The cacao specks make it match the countertop tee hee.

  3. Areej says:

Can I sub cocoa powder? I never tried raw cacao before how does it taste like?

    • Girlonraw says:

Yes you can Areej, however it won’t then be raw, but still yummy! Oh and it won’t have the crunch texture but will still taste great!

You can buy both raw cacao powder and nibs from Geant in Bahrain and basically the nibs are pieces of the cacao bean and the powder is the nibs (bean) ground to a powder. It tastes bitter like a high percentage dark chocolate and kinda bitter. I like nibbling on the nibs in a trail mix with gojis, almonds, pumpkin seeds sesame seeds etc. Like dark chocolate it is bitter at first then you become accustomed to it!

This looks delicious! YUM! Thanks for the recipe!

  5. I’ve made a similar smoothie and I agree, it’s awesome. And cacao nibs make everything better! I love them!

  6. I have to question: Doesn’t freezing food ruin the enzymes just as bad as cooking them? That’s all I keep asking when I look at one “raw” treat after another…

    • Girlonraw says:

Hiya Raederle! Thanks for such a good question!

This is what I have learnt through my own research and also through my group at 105degrees culinary class in OKC earlier this year…

Freezing does not kill enzymes (which are proteins), it slows down the enzymes. It’s the same with bacteria, freezing does not kill all bacteria it just slows growth of bacteria.
So for example, if you thaw frozen fruit it would then continue to ripen and then spoil due to enzyme activity. Freezing may destroy the cellular walls of some fruits or vegetables (via water in food expanding as it freezes), effectively killing the food, but the enzymes should still be intact…
We all know that high temperatures will denature enzymes… and there is evidence that cyclic freezing and thawing will also denature enzymes, which is probably more important for when plants are growing in early spring…

      That’s some of what I’ve learned anyway…
      Hope that helps…

      Here’s a link to a USDA Q&A site:
Not everything the USDA does is perfect (they give info on how to kill enzymes before freezing!!!) but it otherwise seems like some good info.

      http://www.fsis.usda.gov/factsheets/focus_on_freezing/index.asp

As for being raw, I really prefer to have most of my fruit as fresh as possible but I live in Saudi Arabia where you can imagine, most of my fresh produce is flown in or grown locally but covered in pesticides! So I have to make do with what is available to me, and if that means choosing organic frozen strawberries over fresh pesticide lade strawberries then I would always choose the former.

      Plus as I noted in yesterday’s post here , I do not eat a 100% raw diet – http://girlonraw.com/2010/09/im-not-100-raw/

I love smoothies with avocado! I have one I make that also has kale, celery and a granny smith apple! It’s so yummy!

  8. oh this sounds wonderful! And I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who sneaks sips from the hubby’s smoothies etc when he is not looking hehe

  9. Mmmmm! This is similar to Pure’s Nick’s No. 7 (my fav in the world!!!), except in place of the banana it has coconut meat. SO GOOOODDDD!!!!!!!

  10. Girlonraw says:

Sorry everyone I omitted one of the vital ingredients!!! 2T of agave nectar. Will amend now!

  11. I love strawberries + cacao nibs!
I’m so sad berry season is ending :[

  12. Sounds amazing – I have to try this!

  13. Livia says:

I gotta try this! this sounds incredible, thank-you! xoxoxxo
