Happy Weekend to my friends in most parts of the world!
Back to the working week for us after a pretty full on weekend.
We had our Aussie Day festivities on Wednesday night complete with Aussie rock and pop music. Despite one of our American friends saying it sounded very 70′s we still managed to get some people up dancing to some ACDC!
And on the music note, another tradition I forgot to mention was the HOTTEST 100! Every year one of our popular youth radio stations, JJJ, holds a countdown of the last years hottest songs as voted by the public.
This year, one of my favourite bands Angus & Julia Stone won with their song Big Jet Plane.
No photos of the food (and I ran out of time to make the raw lamington macaroons but for a REAL lamington check out Lisa’s blog here and while you are at it, check out her Aussie Food tribute posts), except for this pavlova our beloved Kiwi friends made for us in honour of our country map, complete with a Tasmania made from a Tim Tam.
And they also reminded us that pavlova is New Zealand in origin not Australian, but they’re pretty much the same, right Pip?
Thursday night saw some more handy work going on in the casa getting ready for bub’s arrival.
Of course my help was in the photography. These pics are proof to my father in law that my husband IS a handyman
Then it was time to welcome my sister’s partner who lives in Riyadh (a mere 4 hour drive away) for dinner!
Was nice to have him over.
So to the food.
Remember the sprouting I did last week?
Well I’ve not been much of a fan of consuming raw beans (I find them heavy and a bit starchy in taste) so 2 of the 3 beans ended up in cooked dishes:
Black Beans —>
Became Black Bean Soup (very loosely based on this recipe here – minus the corn and not made to any measurements at all!)
Garnished with my RAW cheese and chive sauce you can find in my free eBook when you sign up for my email club here
Garbanzo Beans/Chickpeas —>
Became Curry Roasted Chickpeas – massage olive oil, celtic sea salt and curry powder through chickpeas and roast them in a HOT oven (425F/220C) for about 30 minutes – but keep an eye they don’t burn.
And Salt & Vinegar Roasted Chickpeas (a la Angela’s recipe from Oh She Glows)
And the RAW recipe was…
Aduki Bean Mexican Salad – recipe to come tomorrow:)
If you sprout, what are some of your favourite recipes to enjoy the beans raw? I am still not much of a fan?

Oh how funny, I bought two cans of chickpeas today with the express purpose of making those salt and vinegar roasted chickpeas this week! (With the other can, I plan to make a chickpea chocolate cake, but it’s going to be so hot this week there’s no way I’ll be turning on the oven!)
I have no experience with raw/sprouted beans so I’m afraid I’ll have to bow out from that part of you post, but hurrah for Angus and Julia Stone! And good ol’ Acca Dacca.
P.S. Doesn’t your dad know that every man becomes a handyman as soon as he gets married? At least that’s what I’ve heard…
Again we work in synchronicity. You will enjoy them, I just needed to put more vinegar in mine.
And yes I love Angus and Julia Stone so well deserved right? Did you listen to the countdown live?
Pat’s dad I think is learning hehe.
As someone who used to sip on little cups of vinegar as a kid, I know I’ll love them
I listened to about the last third of it live, and the earlier songs in bits and pieces? I must admit I didn’t know all of the songs, so I got really excited when what I did know came on. Do you like that Bloodbuzz Ohio song?
Oops, father-in-law! Must’ve missed that
MMm yummy! Food looks great (esp your aduki salad…and black bean soup and the chickpeas…guess I love it all
) Great handyman pics! I love having a handyman around too.
The song was cool. Do you think you like this song in particular because of its title?
I think you are completely right about the song!! I didn’t even think about that til you said it.
You DID have a full weekend! I also do not enjoy raw beans, but maybe because I have not experimented with them enough. The soup and and the roasted chickpeas look incredible though! I love salt-and-vinegar anything, especially in the kale chip form.
Oh wow, look at all you’ve done! I, too, am (gently/slow-) cooking my chick peas/garbanzo beans, though after I sprout them. Not sure if this helps with the nutrient intake, but raw doesn’t taste too yummy to me (yet?). Keep us informed!
So you’re admitting Pavlova is from New Zealand? Hahahaha.
I love Angus & Julia! Went to their gig in Perth last year and was soooo great! Off to see Amanda Palmer tonight – yay!
Happy Aussie day honey!
