Why Girl on Raw?

photo 41 About

Hi, I’m Robyn Law.I call myself Girl on Raw, as I began this website when I was just a girl fumbling my way through my raw food journey and wanted to share my musings with others.Since then I’ve completed culinary school in the Fundmentals of Raw Cuisine, as well as other professional studies to compliment my years of self study, research and practice.

Who are you?

photo 22 About

I’m an Aussie girl, who dreamed of travelling the world, so I became an international flight attendant. Through my career I have been lucky  to  live, travel & holiday to places including Scotland, London, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Austria, Jordan, USA, Lebanon, Dubai, Qatar, Oman, Ireland, India, China, Portugal, Bahrain, Cuba, Mexico, Hawaii (USA), Spain, France, Switzerland, Bali, Canada, Italy, Albania and still new places to explore. You can read some of the highlights of my flying career here.

A few years back I ended up in Saudi Arabia. Here I met and married a fellow Aussie who’s my best friend and salsa dance partner and now have a cheeky toddler for a son, and another baby girl on the way.

Where do you live now?

In Saudi Arabia. You can read more about my experience of Living in the Gulf here, or Compound Living here.

What Is Raw?

You can read more RAW here and some ways to get started here.

Why Raw?

Like plenty of women (and men), for years I waded through the latest diet fads, trying to achieve the ellusive ‘perfect figure’ to match my cute little uniform. And sometimes they worked and other times they didn’t. The one thing that remained constant was that nothing was lasting, both in regime and results. Until I stumbled on a detox cleanse in Thailand at the Spa Resorts which changed my outlook on everything in my life, not just my diet, but the whole picture. If I became kind to myself on the inside, the outside would begin to heal too. I’ve visited 3 times and you can read more about our most recent experience at the resort here.  Gradually, I began cleaning up my diet and lifestyle, devouring recipe and scientific books, experimenting in the kitchen, seeking advice from experts who later became my friends and mentors, which led me to learn more about raw food and it’s benefits.

Are you 100% Raw?

Although I don’t follow a 100% raw diet, I aim to maintain a high raw plant based diet as well as a wholesome attitude to life, which doesn’t only encompass what I eat, but also how I live my life.

When I am at home, I tend to eat mostly raw, some days I may eat 100% where as others I may only eat 50%. I’m really not that rigid about it, however eating this way has given me a sense of freedom and flexibility I never felt i had with any other way of eating or living. And eating this way has made it much easier for me to listen to my body. I feel best when the majority of my diet is a raw living food diet and it has improved my health and of those around me. Of course, as a family we do love to travel, and we have a fearless approach to experiencing new cultures and foods and never feel guilty for this!

Here’s a post I wrote on diet labels.

What are your usual fridge/pantry staples?

They can change from time to time but here are some of my latest faves.

Where do you shop for food?

This can be subject to change, however these are my favourite places to shop right now in Saudi Arabia and our neighbouring country of Bahrain as well as plenty of online shopping for items we just cannot source here icon wink AboutWhere I shop in Saudi & BahrainWhere I shop in Saudi UPDATED

Which culinary school did you attend?

Matthew Kenney Academy (formerly 105 degrees) in Oklahoma City, USA. under the instruction of the UK’s leading Raw Chef, Russell James, The Raw Food Chef. Russell now offers a 10 week Home Study Chef training online. You can find out more about it here. You can read more about my time at 105 degrees here.

Do you have an recipe books/e-books?

YES! I have a free recipe e-book you can sign up for here.  I also have an e-book Travelling in the Raw you can purchase here. And I have a few more e-books in the making. You can check out my store here.

What dehydrator do you use?

NewImage17 About

An Excalibur 9 Tray with 26 hour timer I love my dehydrator! I try to not use it too much when I am concentrating on more wholefoods, but it certainly adds some more variety to a High Raw diet such as mine. You can use it in so many ways, including to make my birthday cake, raw pizza, flax crackers, veggie crisps, and even COOKIES.When I was looking around at dehydrators, I consulted many friends who already had theirs and they ALL recommended without fail an EXCALIBUR 9 Tray with 26 hour timer (even though I was interested in a 5 Tray initially).

As dehydrating foods can take some time, a timer is a necessity so you don’t have to stop the process whilst asleep or away from home. Also, as much as Excalibur offer a 5 tray model, anyone I have known who has ordered a smaller version has wished for the 9 tray after the fact. It has more room to make larger items and easily a couple of tomatoes dehydrating can take up to 5 trays or more.

I also used the stainless steel TSM 10 tray model at culinary school which worked fabulously however it didn’t have a temperature gauge so you have to purchase one separately (inexpensive from a kitchen store) and I’ve also heard the more modern and sleeker Tribest Sedona’s are quite competitive with the Excaliburs.

Any other models, like the circular cheaper brands I’ve heard can not dry evenly leaving wraps moist in the parts and dryer in others as well as not having the ability to craft your shapes and sizes like wraps and pizza bases as they seem to have very small surface areas.

What blender do you use?

NewImage16 About

A Vitamix TNC5200 & a Vitamix Turbo blend 4500 – both are 110v. For travel we also take our Tribest Personal Blender 250PB 220v.

Which food processor do you use?

I just use a cheapie, Kenwood which has lasted 3 years. I don’t find it necessary to spend loads on a food processor as they do not vary in standard as greatly as a blender. Spend the money on a high speed blender instead.Which juicer do you use?

NewImage19 About

A Champion masticating juicer and occasionally a Kenwood centrifugal juicer.

Eating raw is so expensive. How do you do it?

I’m happy to spend the money on eating well as I don’t spend the amount of money I used to on partying. Plus I figure that the money I am saving on meat, is well spent on more fruit and vegetables and in the long run, my health will benefit from having less (hopefully none) medical costs and I live a long and healthy life icon smile About

Eating raw is so time consuming. How do you do it?

When I first started writing this blog, 3 years ago, I was really excited about sharing the more gourmet side of raw. At the time, as a newbie to raw myself and in transition from a cooked, processed food diet, it was really appealing to me to be able to recreate healthy versions of my cooked favourites, like birthday cakesburgers, lasagna and other more complicated pasta dishes, crackers, pizza, yoghurt parfaitsice creams and plenty more.

My tastes have simplified over time with my transition to a high raw diet, and my time has become more of a luxury since becoming a mum amongst other things, I have been gravitating towards quick, simple, tasty meals and techniques. I am posting my EASY dishes (made in 15 minutes or less) here. You can make raw as gourmet or simple as you want it to be, but it will always be yum!

Do you offer raw food coaching?

I sure do! I’ll be launching my coaching in September, so if you want to find out more, sign up here and you’ll be the first to know.

Is your son raw?

547245 10151079532480768 1045771724 n 500x500 About

Although my aim is to feed Manus a predominantly raw diet, he also has another parent who is not raw nor vegan (but believes in the benefits and supports my choices) however, Manus is not strict vegan nor raw and has occasionally had chicken and beef, but not in great amounts, but we do try to ensure his food is high fruit and vegetable based and little or no dairy (other than his formula) or eggs, at this point in time. This is how I started Manus on solids. And you can read more about our experiences with parenthood here.

Did you breastfeed?

You can read about my breastfeeding experience part 1 & part 2.

Can you tell us about your birth story?

Yes, but I’m yet to have written it down. Hopefully before no 2. is born icon smile About

Is your husband raw?

Sometimes, but he still enjoys a cooked dinner every night and was big time into juicing before we even met. We have matching Champion juicers icon wink About

  3. Hi Robyn!
I just stumbled across your blog while looking for a recipe for adzuki beans and I’m so glad I found it! I’m currently living in Canada but I lived in Bahrain for 5 years prior to coming here for university – small world!! I can’t wait to have a look around your blog and browse some of your recipes, as I’m looking for more raw ones to incorporate into my diet. Keep up the great work!

  4. Amie Sue says:

Good evening… I see that you mentioned, “Diploma in Clinical Nutrition to complement my culinary skills learnt from 105degrees.” Is this a local class at a college or on-line? I have been enjoying your site. :)

  5. I’m so glad you stopped by my site! I am not thoroughly intrigued by this 105 degree school you went to!! I want to go!

  6. Wow, girl! You have such an amazingly interesting life! So cool! I look forward to following along!!!! Email me..where did you get your nutrition certs? I am always looking to update my certs, especially ones that support the plant based philosphy. I have a few in fitness nutrition and the Clinical Nutrition I studied years ago is not longer around.

I wish 105 degrees was here in Philly. I have longed to go there for a few years now.

  7. Kiah says:

Wow, you have lived a ton of places! I’m kind of jealous :-) My husband and I have talked about trying to work abroad for a year when we finish grad school, but at this point it’s just a pipe dream.

  8. Keely says:

Loved finding your blog! And thanks for visiting mine. I was actually raw for about 18 months a few years ago while I was living in England, India and Israel. How do you find it in Saudi Arabia – I thought the middle east had some of the most amazing food and raw food I’ve ever tasted. I’m a pescatarian now, but you’ve inspired me to concentrate on more living foods again, less refined stuff – which is hard to do when I’m working flat tac. Keep up the good work!

  9. Liz says:

Thanks for visiting my blog. This site is fascinating – I have to admit to being pretty unaware of raw food and this has made me think – cooked food tends to be my default position and perhaps i could be thinking about more raw options.

  10. I’m glad I found your site. I started making raw desserts 2 years ago and have been hooked every since.
I tend towards vegetarism most times but still haven’t made the jump, but I’m inching closer
    Raymond

    Hey, Robyn,

Just discovered your blog and I am loving all the content and resources – well done! I’m curious: you mentioned you were a flight attendant and I’ve heard that flight attendants have to fight off sickness a LOT more than the average person, due to spending so much time in planes. Did you find that the benefits of eating raw enabled you to stay healthier than other attendants?

    Thanks for your time!

  20. Robyn,

I just came across your website as I am working with 2 clients in Saudi Arabia – and I grew up there. My dad worked for Aramco for 30 years and all of us (myself and 3 siblings) were born and raised in Dhahran. I am a nutritional counselor here in the Washington DC area and am so passionate about eating well….for our bodies, our earth, and our future. Great to see you are in my hometown and I know helping so many!!

I also was curious about any farmer’s markets in Dhahran? I am passing your information onto my clients – in hopes that they will get in touch with you as I think it is always nice to have a support group.

I hope our paths might cross again –

Hi Katherine, so lovely to hear from you! My son and soon to be daughter, have also been born here so I think Dhahran will always have a special place in our hearts.

Aramco have started in the cooler months (through the environmental group SAVE) having Farmers Markets as well as CSA boxes (of which we took part and was wonderful as there are a couple of organic farmers in the area that we wouldn’t have normally had access too). Tell your clients to get in touch with SAVE on camp.

Also I wrote two blog posts on where I shop in Saudi – you can find them here and here

Great to hear from you and keep in touch!

    Hi Robyn..

You have a colorful life. Every face in the photos is starry. You need to write a post describing what you do for your life and then share it for us..
